about Dr. Alexis Anderson
I’m Dr. Alexis Anderson, a California psychiatrist providing deeply personalized care for women navigating the emotional, cognitive, and psychological changes of midlife.
My practice brings psychotherapy, psychiatric medication management, and hormone-informed care into one continuous therapeutic relationship. Rather than addressing symptoms in isolation, I take the time to understand how your biology, personal history, relationships, responsibilities, and present circumstances intersect.
A Different Kind of Psychiatric Relationship
Meaningful psychiatric care begins with being understood.
Every appointment includes time for thoughtful conversation and psychotherapy—not only a review of symptoms or medications. By intentionally limiting the size of my practice, I’m able to offer 50-minute appointments, continuity over time, flexible scheduling, and direct physician communication between visits when needed.
This is a concierge practice for women who value depth, privacy, and a close working relationship with one physician who knows their story.
Training and Experience
I completed my residency training in Adult Psychiatry at Yale University and fellowship training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco.
I have been in private practice since 2008. Over nearly two decades, I have helped women understand and navigate depression, anxiety, ADHD, perfectionism, relationship difficulties, parenting concerns, identity transitions, and other emotionally complex periods of life.
My work integrates psychodynamic psychotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy with thoughtful psychiatric prescribing and individualized lifestyle strategies.
Why I Focus on Women in Midlife
Perimenopause and menopause can affect far more than the menstrual cycle. Shifting hormones may interact with sleep, mood, anxiety, attention, memory, stress tolerance, and a woman’s previous psychiatric history.
At the same time, not every symptom experienced during midlife is hormonal. This stage often coincides with demanding careers, changing relationships, parenting adolescents, caring for aging parents, grief, identity shifts, and questions about how a woman wants to live the next chapter of her life.
Careful psychiatric assessment means considering all of these possibilities rather than reducing a woman’s experience to either “just hormones” or “just stress.”
I know this transition personally as well as professionally. My own experience of perimenopause—including significant changes in sleep—deepened my appreciation for how quietly biological changes can reshape a woman’s sense of herself.
Hormone-Informed Psychiatric Care
Hormone-informed care means understanding how reproductive transitions may affect mental health while remaining attentive to the complete clinical picture.
I prescribe and manage psychiatric medications when appropriate. I do not prescribe menopause hormone therapy directly. When hormone treatment is part of a patient’s care, I collaborate with her OB/GYN or menopause clinician so that psychiatric and hormonal decisions are considered together rather than in isolation.
Who I Work With
My practice is designed for women seeking an ongoing and highly personalized psychiatric relationship rather than a one-time consultation or medication-only appointment.
I commonly work with women experiencing:
Depression or recurrent depression during perimenopause and menopause
Anxiety, panic, or a new sense of emotional vulnerability
Sleep disruption and its effects on mood and cognition
ADHD symptoms or increasing executive-function difficulties
Brain fog, problems with attention, and memory concerns
Perfectionism, shame, relationship difficulties, and identity transitions
The cumulative emotional demands of career, parenting, caregiving, and midlife change
California Telepsychiatry
I provide secure virtual appointments to women throughout California, including the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, San Diego, Santa Barbara, and surrounding communities.
Patients must be physically located in California at the time of each appointment.
